Ayin Hara

Question

What is an Ayin Hara (evil eye)? Why would G-d “lower” someone because another is covetous towards them?

Answer

When someone is covetous of you, it does not mean that you are “lowered.” It means that G-d considers the other person’s complaint that you have more than he does, and then Gd examines you more closely to see if you are deserving of your wealth. Thus, the object of the ayin hara is placed under a microscope which might not end up harming him, but could potentially do so.
