I’m married to a non-Jew. She is in the process of converting. We just had a baby about 2 months a go. How does a nonJewish baby convert to Judaism? Can the baby become Jewish in anyway before the mother converts?
Thank you for your question. A child can convert along with a parent, or even on its own if adopted. The baby would immerse in a Mikvah under the supervision of a Jewish parent, and when she is 12 or mature enough to make decisions regarding her life she can either accept or opt out of the conversion. Generally, a Jewish Court would require that both parents be Jewish and living according to all of the laws of our Torah before converting a child. There is an excellent organization that is helpful in situations such as yours called Eternal Jewish Family that you may find very useful. They can be reached at 845-425-3863, or you can find them here online.
Take care,
Rabbi Aaron Tendler
