Webcams and Internet

Question

My daughter moved to Israel, married and became a Hasid. I now have a grandaughter and a grandchild on the way.I am told that a webcam is against their beliefs and they do not have a computer in their home. I would like to see my family grow up. What is the position on the use of internet and webcams among Hasidim?

Answer

There is nothing wrong with using a webcam for people to see their families. The problem is the Internet in general. If there would be a way to connect so that they did not have to have the Internet in their house they would probably do it. Many people do not want the dangers of the Internet in their homes. As you know, information found on the Internet can be extremely dangerous especially to children. Therefore, there are many religious Jews that do not choose to have internet access in the homes at all. There are phones that are sold that can transmit video. They are expensive, but if you are desperate enough you might want to consider it.

Also, there is an idea practiced by some that pictures and video are not taken because of the prohibition of making an engraven image. Most religious Jews and rabbis do not believe that taking ones picture is a problem, but there are some Chassidic authorities who do. If they are part of such sects of Chasidim that might be an issue as well.

Be Well,
