Lucifer

Question

A non-Jewish friend of mine emailed portions of Isaiah to in which there is a statement in Isa 14:12 – “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” Is this the proper translation of this portion and of the name Lucifer?

Answer

Lucifer is a fallacy that has krept into Christian readings of this verse. They are incorrect and untrue to the text. The verses are talking about the rule of Nevuchadnezer the King of Babel and it is making reference to the shining star of the kingdom (metaphorically)that he used to shine like the morning star has been cut down and crashed to the ground. They have mixed in Lucifer (or Satan) due to some confusion with a verse in the New Testament that calls Lucifer the morning star and they decided to just make Lucifer the morning star where ever the text says morning star. So in the King James edition in Isaiah they just stuck in Lucifer even though it has nothing to do with the context, nothing to do with the original Hebrew text, etc. It is a perversion of the text.
