Someone told me that he’s been designing a house for a Jewish customer who specifically asked that his bed not be facing the bedroom’s front door. I never heard of such thing. Is there a law in regards to the bed position or is it is some sort of precept that should be obeyed?
Thank you for your question. I believe that the basis of this custom is because when a dead person is carried out of his home, he is carried out on a bed with the feet going through the door first. It is therefore considered an Ayin Hara- inviting the “evil eye” to have the bed facing the door. However, this is not a universally accepted custom by Jews.
Take care,
Rabbi Aaron Tendler
