When the Son of a Levite Converts

Question

There is someone’s who’s father is a Levite, but whose mother is not Jewish. Would he be considered a Levite if he chose to convert?

Answer

The title of Levite is passed down paternally, as you might know. However, one who converts is considered as if they were newly born. Their connection to Judaism is seen through our forefather Abraham who is called “the father of all the nations”, a reference to Abraham’s desire to spread the belief in G-d to the whole world, a “spiritual” father as it were. For this reason he would not be considered a Levite. It’s important to keep in mind that although they can’t be Levites righteous converts are said to be able to achieve spiritual heights that those born into Judaism cannot attain and are especially dear to G-d.
