Marriage Verses

Question

My daughter is getting married. She would like me to read a message in english from the torah that would have meaning to “marriage”.

Answer

While not from the Torah section of the Bible per se (but rather from the Prophets) there are two verses in Jeremiah which are quite appropriate for a marriage. In fact, a declaration based upon the verses is traditionally sung and recited at Jewish weddings. The verses are even more meaningful in that they also express a yearning and promise for the destiny of the Jewish people.

The verses are found in Jeremiah 33:10-11:

Thus said G-d: “There will again be heard in this place about which you say ‘It is destroyed, without man and without animal,’ in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant and without animal, the sound of joy and the sound of gladnes, the sound of groom and the sound of bride, the sound of people saying, ‘Praise G-d Master of Legions, for G-d is good, for His mercy is forever,’ bringing thanksgiving offerings to the Temple of G-d; for I will return the captivity of the land as at first,” said G-d.
