Is there one prayer or many prayers that are said for someone who is seriously ill? Someone I know is in serious condition in the hospital. What prayer can I say to help the healing begin?
First of all, let me say that I pray and hope for the recovery of your friend.
As they are replete with messages of the love and compassion of G-d (among many other important messages), the Book of Psalms are traditionally recited for the benefit of one in need of healing. One thoughful idea would be to choose one or more psalms and study them; the recitation of those psalms will then be even more meaningful.
However, it is important to note that the content is not the most important thing — the intent is. Heartfelt, personal prayers, whether from Psalms or your own words, are always heard by G-d.
One more point I feel I should make — G-d always hears our prayers and our prayers ALWAYS have an impact, but for reasons we don’t understand, sometimes, G-d’s answer is “No”. Its very difficult to accept and understand, but the fact remains, that G-d always listens no matter what the outcome. I wish your friend a speedy recovery.
Be well,
Rabbi Yoel Spotts
