I was wondering about circumcision. For some unknown medical reason the Dr. at the hospital told me when my son was born that my son could not be circumcised yet (personally I think he tried to talk me out of it because I did not have an insurance co. that would reimburse him well) but he scared me and said that my son had a curve in the skin and that if we did it when he was that small it could damage him. Now I have to wait until he is two years old because now he needs anesthesia. Can a Rabbi still perform the circumcision?
It just so happens that I am a Mohel and perform circumcisions. There is such a defect that depending on the severity can necessitate the delay of the circumcision. Without seeing the child it would be impossible for me to advise you to whether it was necessary to wait or not. I always recommend for the parents to see a pediatric urologist who can give an authoritative opinion, not a Pediatrician or OBGYN. If you have the ability to see one that is the best route. As far as getting a Mohel to do it, it is possible. I would contact a local orthodox rabbi or find a Mohel in your area or nearby that can perform the procedure on an older child. It is done in a hospital or medical clinic that can administer anesthesia and it is usually conducted together with a doctor. This would be a kosher circumcision. If you have trouble locating a Mohel in your area please let me know. The first place to start is a local orthodox synagogue.
