Ask the Rabbi: answers from Project Genesis rabbis

Formal Prayer and Its Purpose

Question

One question that has troubled me is the purpose of prayer. Is it for ourselves? for God? Can we petition the Lord with prayer? Prayer was never specifically mentioned in the five books of Moses, at least set prayer. I feel that the set prayers are taking time away from studying to understand. Can you help me see or understand this question.

Answer

Thanks for your question. The purpose of prayer is not for God. He does not need your or my prayer. The purpose of prayer is for you and me. We need it. We are human and need the help and assistance. Prayer gives us that because, if done properly, prayer can connect you with Your Creator and send you on a journey that you can only imagine.

The prayers were written by the Men of the Great Assembly. These prayers contain the secrets of Jewish mysticism and prayer. Without them I do not believe that you would be able to achieve the spirituality that you are looking for. I suggest you get a hold of the Artscroll Siddur. Go to the Artscroll site here and select “Prayer books”. You can choose from Translated, Transliterated, Interlinear translation, and more – check it out!

Be Well,
