Difficulties with belief

Question

There are many things in the Torah that I have trouble accepting and believing. I don’t think it’s likely that I could talk myself into believing these things, and yet I’m not looking for excuses. So, what’s a Jew to do?

Answer

My simple answer to you is to continue learning. I often have questions about things I see in the Torah and the words of our sages. On more than one occasion I have found things difficult to comprehend and accept. But over my years of study I have come to discover that generally what I don’t understand and find hard to fathom is a result of flaws in my own knowledge. When I fix the flaw everything is clear. More often than not, the clarity is not something I am looking for specifically, but studying one topic gives me a perspective that allows me to solve something I previously found troubling.

As to whether or not the Torah is factually accurate, or, more appropriately, to what extent we are meant to understand the words of the Torah literally, and when they are meant to be understood figuratively, it is not possible to give a one-size fits all response. As one travels through the seas of the Torah one can begin to develop a sense of how the sages and commentators dealt with each topic- which ideas did they take as literal and which ones not. Only through study can one arrive at any degree of clarity.
