Taking Care of Yourself

Question: I have to plan a program where we talk about taking care of ourselves. I was wondering if there is any information in the Torah about taking care of oneself.

Answer: One of the central sources for taking care of oneself can be found in Deuteronomy 4:9. The verse states: “Only guard yourself and greatly guard your soul…” Although it is taken out of context, the Sages of the Talmud derive from these verses the obligation to protect oneself and the prohibition of doing things that are harmful to oneself. I hope your program is a success. Write back any time.Sincerely,
R’ Daniel Fleksher
