In Deuteronomy 22:12 the Torah states, “You shall make for yourselves ‘gedilim’ [fringes] on the 4 corners of the garment with which you cover yourself.” Are these gedilim the same as the tzitzit [fringes] found in Numbers 15:38-39?
My tallit, like most others I’ve seen, have both long fringes on the corners and shorter fringes along the edges. Are the tzitzit the long strings on the corner, and the gedilim the shorter strings running along the edges?
Both words, gedilim and tzitzit, mean “growth” or “sprouting” (i.e. extra threads sprouting out). In this case the words refer to the same fringes – those long ones on the corners. The fringes on the edges are just decorative.
