Autopsy

Is it ever permissible for an autopsy to be performed on someone of the Jewish faith who has died? For example, if the findings of an autopsy could help save another life, is an autopsy permitted on a deceased person?

The simple answer is yes. If there is a chance that by performing an autopsy someone’s life could be saved (as a direct consequence) then autopsy would not only be permitted, but mandatory. However, an autopsy for insurance purposes, or to determine the cause of death for the government/ medical records is not permitted. Similarly, dissection for medical training purposes is forbidden (even though it will ultimately lead to saving lives at some point in the future).

Obviously, sometimes the police demand an autopsy, and it is impossible to avoid. However, where possible Jews should do everything they can to prevent an autopsy.
