Megillah (Scroll) of Esther: Accuracy and Lessons

Question: Do you believe that the book of Esther is historically accurate? If it is not, do you believe that the lessons we can learn from it are equally as valid?

Answer: Thank you for asking this question. The answer is that yes, I believe that the book is Esther is historically valid.

In terms of the lessons found in the book – they are priceless. To see that the entire book does not mention G-d’s name once, but yet, the entire book is about “The King” who our commentaries say is G-d is amazing. The concept of a Queen giving up everything for who she is and the people that she belongs to is inspirational, and the fact that Haman got exactly what he deserved highlights the concept of “Midda K’neged Mida” – “Measure for measure” – a very Jewish concept.

There are lots of books about the subject. If you want to know more see the articles at Aish.com and Torah.org.

You will learn more than you ever wanted to know about Purim and the megillah there. Trust me, there is so much hidden info in the Megillah of Esther that it is mind boggling.

Be Well,
Rabbi Litt
