Question: I heard that it is a custom for men to buy their wives and daughters cloths or jewelery and I’m wondering if there is an exact source for that?
Answer: The Talmud says in the Tractate of Pesachim, page 109a, that both men and women are obligated to rejoice on Passover, Shavuos, and Succos. That means they need to do something that really gives them pleasure. Since men and women are different, the Talmud says they get joy from different things. For men, it’s a feast – with meat and wine. Whereas women get more pleasure from nice new clothing, especially if their husbands buy it for them.
