Angels in Judaism

Do angels exist?

Angels most certainly are an integral part of our understanding of the universe. There are many instances of angels mentioned in the Torah [Five Books of Moses] and there are numerous customs associated with angels too. For instance, we sing a special song on Friday night called “sholom aleichem Malachei Hashoress…” – Peace unto you angels on high, a reference to the tradition that two angels accompany a man from synagogue Friday evening.

There is another beautiful tradition that we have that every Jew was visited by an angel while in the womb who taught him/her the entire Torah. Just prior to exiting the womb the angel strikes the child and causes it to forget what it studied and now the child must work throughout its life to reclaim its heritage. There is actually a new book called “What the angel taught you” that speaks all about this incredible concept. It is available form Artscroll here .
