Condemned Souls?

Question: What sin would someone have to commit for their soul to be condemned?

Answer: Thank you for your question. In Judaism we don’t believe that a person’s soul is “condemned”. A soul is very pure, and is very much a living part of G-d. However, there are things that can cause a person to lose his portion in the “World To Come”, i.e. his soul will not share in the ultimate reward received for good deeds done, after his death. These things are listed in the Mishna in the 11th chapter of Sanhedrin and elaborated on in the Talmud there. Some of them are, people who don’t believe that G-d created the world, people who don’t believe that the Torah (Bible/ Old Testament) was given to us by G-d, and people who study the books of atheistic philosophers.

Take care,
Rabbi Aaron Tendler
