Just found out that I’m Jewish. Where do I start?

Question: I am a 18 year old girl and I just found out that I was Jewish. I would like to practice but I don’t know where to start. What should I do?

Answer: Welcome home! I would suggest that you do three things right now.

1. Get hold of a copy of To Be a Jew by Hayim H. Donin or This is My God by Herman Wouk and read it.

2. Make contact with an Orthodox rabbi in a community near you, preferably from a larger community. There may be a small community closer by but you need to be linked with a strong support group to help you through the many challenges and doubts ahead of you.

3. Contact Partners in Torah and sign up to have a weekly phone study partner to learn about Judaism at no cost or obligation.

I wish you much success in your Jewish life and studies and feel free to be in touch with any questions.

All the Best,
Rabbi Azriel Schreiber
