Why is Rosh Hashana considered the new year? The Torah only says that Rosh Hashana is a day to blow the horn. What is the background of the Rosh Hashana customs.
You’re correct that the Torah itself does not call that day Rosh Hashana, rather ‘The day of Blowing’. However, our Sages had a tradition passed down from Moses that on the 1st day of the Jewish month of Tishrei (Rosh Hashana) every year, the world is judged by G-d regarding the coming year; in other words, on that day, G-d determines what blessings and curses the next 12 months will bring. The Rabbis then called it the New Year because of that new judgement.
