In Deut. 24:4 G-d tells us not to remarry a former spouse if he/she has remarried someone else. Why is this?
Bottom line, it’s God’s will. That’s our first answer to every mitzvah in the Torah. One explanation is because this practice has overtones of lewdness (“wife-swapping”) that is the opposite of holiness.
